Checklist for Possible Presence of a Learning Disability

Does the person perform similar tasks differently from day to day? Does the person read well but not write well, or write well but not read well? Is the person able to learn information presented in one way, but not in another? Does the person have a short attention span, impulsivity, and/or difficulty maintaining focus? Does the person have difficulty telling or understanding jokes? Does the person misinterpret language and/or have poor comprehension of what Read more…

Treatment of Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss can result from acoustic trauma (or exposure to excessively loud noise), which may respond to medical therapy with corticosteroids to reduce cochlea hair cell swelling and inflammation to improve healing of these injured inner ear structures. Sensorineural hearing loss can occur from head trauma or abrupt changes in air pressure such as in airplane descent, which can cause inner ear fluid compartment rupture or leakage, which can be toxic to the inner ear. There Read more…

Psychological counseling as an adjunct to stuttering treatment: Clients’ experiences and perceptions.

PURPOSE: Stuttering can trigger anxiety and other psychological and emotional reactions, and limit participation in society. It is possible that psychological counseling could enhance stuttering treatment outcomes; however, little is known about how clients view such counseling. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of clients’ experiences with, and perceptions of, a psychological counseling service that was offered as an optional adjunct to speech therapy for stuttering. METHOD: Nine individuals who stutter (13-38 years old) participated in semi-structured Read more…

The value of ASSR threshold-based bilateral hearing aid fitting in children with difficult or unreliable behavioral audiometry.

We conducted an analysis to assess the relative contribution of auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing and auditory steady-state response (ASSR) testing in providing appropriate hearing aid fitting in hearing-impaired children with difficult or unreliable behavioral audiometry. Of 150 infants and children who had been referred to us for hearing assessment as part of a neonatal hearing screening and cochlear implantation program, we identified 5 who exhibited significant discrepancies between click-ABR and ASSR testing results and difficult or Read more…

Migraine Related Vertigo

Migraine related vertigo (MRV) is largely accepted in the vestibular community and probably represents the second most common cause of vertigo after benign positional vertigo by far exceeding Meniere’s disease. The data on vestibular migraine management is still relatively poor, despite its enormous importance in daily practice. A 55-year old male presented with history of giddiness, imbalance, sweating and sensation of nausea with severe pulsating headache of one day duration. Ear, Nose and Throat examination was Read more…

A Qualitative Study on Knowledge and Attitude towards Risk Factors, Early Identification and Intervention of Infant Hearing Loss among Puerperal Mothers- A Short Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal active participation and their support are critical for the success of early hearing loss detection program. Erroneous maternal decisions may have large life long consequences on the infant’s life. The mothers’ knowledge and their attitudes towards infant hearing loss is the basis for their decisions. AIM: The present study was done to determine the mothers’ knowledge and their attitude towards risk factors of infant hearing loss, its earlyidentification and intervention and also awareness of effect of consanguinity on hearing loss. MATERIALS AND Read more…

Pure Tone Audiometry

The purpose of this study is to investigate what characteristics of tinnitus in patients with chronic otitis media was reduced after tympanoplasty and to assess the relationship between post-operative tinnitus reduction and pre-operative tinnitus tone, tinnitus duration, post-operative hearing recovery, and tympanogram. Medical records were prospective between March 2013 and May 2016. Audiologic evaluation by pure tone audiometry and acoustic impedance and tinnitus assessment using scores on the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) was conducted preoperatively and 6 months post-operatively. PURE TONE AUDIOMETRY

Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is the key hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual, enabling determination of the degree, type and configuration of a hearing loss. Thus, providing the basis for diagnosis and management. PTA is a subjective, behavioural measurement of hearing threshold, as it relies on patient response to pure tone stimuli. Therefore, PTA is used on adults and children old enough to cooperate with the test procedure. AUDIOGRAM– The Read more…

IMMITTANCE AUDIOMETRY

Immittance audiometry is an objective technique which evaluates middle ear function by three procedures: static immittance, tympanometry, and the measurement of acoustic reflex threshold sensitivity. In this test, a small probe is placed in the ear and the air pressure in the ear canal is varied. This test tells how well the eardrum and other structures in the middle ear are working. In acoustic reflex testing a probe is placed in the ear and a Read more…
